November 2003 Feature Story
Robert Lockwood Jr.

Tuesday & Wednesday, 11/11 & 12 @ Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, Seattle, 8pm

Born in 1915, Robert Lockwood, Jr. has been playing music professionally since he was 15 years old. Recently, in the last 20 years, the blues world has recognized Lockwood’s contributions to the genre. He holds 2 W.C. Handy awards, is a Blues Hall of Fame and Delta Blues Hall of Fame inductee, holds two honorary doctorate degrees, both the cities of Cleveland and Pittsburgh have an annual “Robert Lockwood Jr. Day,” has a street named after him in Cleveland’s Flat District, and has received a National Heritage Fellowship Award, presented by Hillary Clinton. Although he is known as Robert Johnson’s only stepson, having learned to play guitar from the legend, his own legacy is very powerful influencing B.B. King among others. He still plays 12 strings extremely well, writes and tours regularly. His recent recording on Telarc was well recognized by the voting members for the Handy’s & Grammy’s.
